School Speeches

In Room 3, we have been writing speeches. Here is mine:

Should it be Illegal to Produce Plastic Throwaway Products?

The ocean, a vital component needed for life on earth, has turned into a dump for global waste. Single-use throwaway plastic is manufactured from non-renewable fossil fuel-based sources and profoundly contribute to climate change. It is the most extensive type of aquatic waste found in our oceans and lakes and I think it is time to put an end to this.

Over the course of time that humans have been on earth, humanity has manufactured approximately 8 billion metric tonnes of plastic. The plastic does not degrade, it simply breaks down into little pieces called microplastic which can be found anywhere in the ocean. The estimated guess for the amount of microplastic every square mile is approximately 460,000-1,000,000 pieces. Plastic bags are the main culprit for the death of many marine life such as turtles, birds and fish as they mistake the plastic as food. It fills up their stomachs and starves them to death. The chemicals in plastic that gives it the flexibility repel water and cling to other petroleum-based objects such as other plastic debris. The microplastics attracts other pollutants, toxic chemicals found in the plastic get released into the water and fuse with other toxins. These infused toxins seep into the blood and tissue of fish and as they go up the food chain, the toxins are highly concentrated and are a lot more deadly and even affect us as humans.

But what makes the toxic plastic so popular and widely used? There are three key aspects held accountable for this: affordability, efficiency and convenience. Since the plastic is so cheap it is easy to obtain. Their intent was to be used once so when it's fulfilled its purpose they're disposed of. They can be found literally anywhere, providing convenience to the buyer. So aside from the cheap prices and handy locations, there aren't many benefits from buying and utilising the plastic.

Plastic pollution is a problem that isn't going to go away unless we take responsibility. If each person devoted their attention to the plastic problem, the detrimental impact of plastic on the world could be decreased, thus I believe all global leaders should criminalize the production of single-use throwaway plastic and put a stop to the destruction we are inflicting on ourselves and our planet.

Plastic Pollution Infographic

In Room 3 for our Week 1-3 Term 3 Topic, we were creating infographics to inform people of the impact that single-use plastic has on the environment.
